Class Debate Help (((Fossil Fuels vs. Nuclear Energy)))?

this is something i need badly, there is a debate between Fossil fuels and nuclear energy. I’m the leader for my half of the class. I’ve researched and i’ve gotten a few things but i need more.i need at least a counter to every disadvantage of fossil fuel that the other team might throw in my way. and i’m sure you guys can help me come up with more advantages of fossil fuel than the most well know and less known disadvantages of nuclear energy. I NEED ANSWERS PLZ =]

Here is the basic info that i have:

advantages of fossil fuels

>Straightforward combustion process
>Relatively inexpensive
>Easily transported

disadvantages of fossil fuels

>Thought to be a major cause of global warming
>Cause of acid rain
>Not sustainable in the long-term
>Politics and Economics can cause major price increases
>Extraction can be very damaging to the landscape

Any debate tips could be helpful too.

    You would think they would teach children constructive things in class these days. I guess there is no solar, wind or wave energy considered in this debate is there. You should tell your teacher to take there head out of their a**.

    Well, this is controversial and might go against your argument but some believe that oil is not a fossil fuel:

    Like most arguments where you have the short end of the stick, you should always talk about the cost to the economy the other option will have.
    The advantages of fossil fuels in this day and age is that humans have made themselves reliant on them and so the industry change to a nuclear system would prove expensive.

    Also, you should consider your counter argument. They will most likely mention the types of Nuclear reactors they have now which are much safer than before:

    Although with any of the processes there will always be at LEAST 10% waste product produced.

    For debate purposes, some good things you should know are that coal plants generally release more radiation than nuclear plants. How? There are naturally occurring isotopes in the coal. Also, coal releases a fair amount of particulates into the atmosphere. This has been implicated in asthma, heart problems, etc. Natural gas prices are very volatile and subject to hurricanes and winter temperatures.

    Nuclear is pretty price competitive per megawatt with coal and cheaper than natural gas. (Higher capital/start-up costs)

    Nuclear has problems too though. While you can’t really conclude this in your debate, what you should learn is the advantage of a balanced energy portfolio.
