Information about an Air Powered car?

Does anyone know anything about Air Powered cars? How do they differ from fuel-cell powered or electric powered cars? Are Air Powered cars coming out soon or sooner than other alternative energy cars?

    Compressed air is just another way of storing energy, so you’ll need another energy source somewhere to run the pump that refills the pressure bottle in the car. It’s not so much an alternate energy source but a way of not needing the primary energy source in your car anymore. I.e. if you’re burning stuff for energy you don’t have to burn it on ground level along crowded city streets, you can burn it at the end of a long chimney out in the suburbs somewhere.

    I don’t have much hope for them, the energy density that can be reached with compressed air is quite poor even compared to batteries.

    A potential advantage as compared to an electric car is that the air car might be faster to recharge. It’s also possible that the air bottles may end up cheaper than the batteries.

    well i heard of an air powered car not so long ago on beyond tomorrow (inventers show) the concept works in a similar way to a diesel engine in a diesel engine air is drawn into the cylinder compressed to a high pressure then the heat of the air combust’s the diesel that had been injected right on TDC
    in an air powered car the air is drawn into the cylinder compressed into a high pressure to heat up the air at the last second a burst of cold compressed air is injected into the cylinder the cold air quickly heats up with the hot air in the cylinder ,expanding forcing the piston down as the piston moves up on the exhaust stroke the exhaust valve opens up and the hot air is pushed out with the piston ready to start the cycle again

    It basically has several cyclinders of very high pressure compressed air driving the pistons in a modified combustion engine. All you need is an air compressor that can deliver sufficient psi. Interesting video on the web. Whether it ever make it to market is debatable.

    The basic physics is not very encouraging. You waste lots of energy in compressing air. Even a very strong ( 6000psi ) tank can only drive a small car a mile or two.

    Not likely to be practical or economical.
