Is it possible to use water as an alternative fuel?

If you could establish some kind of electrolysis system thereby separating the oxygen and hydrogen into separate tanks, then having a continuous stream of oxygen as a burning agent and the hydrogen as fuel, would it be theoretically possible to power, say, a car?

      it would have been a better idea if this alternative fuel exists but from the view of sustainable development it might not be besttttttt.

      Of course it is but why would petroleum companies want to spend money on such research when they make so much out of oil.

      Alternative fuel sources and power sources will never flourish to the point where all users will have that instead of oil etc.
      Unfortunately, until those types of things run out, or become WAY too expensive, society will keep using what is familiar and what is proved to be ‘reliable’ for them.

      I think there are a few inventors out there with water powered cars already as I have come across a few site while researching electric vehicles.

      No it not possible to use water as an alternative fuel.

      It is possible to do that but the energy required to split the water into H and O would exceed the output of energy from burning/using the H in an engine or fuel cell to power the car and run an alternator/generator. In essence, you would have to carry a battery pack in addition to the engine to provide the energy to split the water so why not just use the battery pack to power the car and eliminate the extra hydrogen conversion hardware? Less weight = better economy. You always lose some energy when converting from one form to another….hydrogen is not a source of energy like fossil fuels…it takes energy to convert it from other sources so it is an energy carrier.

      Some designs use hydrogen gas or HHO as some call their systems created by onboard electrolizers to supplement the standard engine fuel intake and improve fuel economy with varying results…lots of videos on Youtube for that.

      One possible way around that is to use urine which has twice as many molecules of H than water and splits apart at lower voltages. The problem is getting enough urine since separating it from human or animal waste systems takes energy/higher costs and the system would still require a battery pack albeit one with lower energy requirements than using water. And the "icky" factor…who’d like to fill up their car with urine although it could help if your stranded or low on funds….sports bars and corner taps could make a killing.

      Another possible solution is chemical…sodium silicides can produce hydrogen gas at low pressures when mixed with water…any water including urine…to provide hydrogen for fuel cells/engines and the byproducts are non-toxic. Some companies already produce them in canisters for military apps, satellites and bikes.

      A little trivia…the first internal combustion engined vehicle in 1807 ran on hydrogen…decades before gas and diesel engines were invented….another one called the Hippomobile dates to 1863.
