Scientists have created life?

A research team has officially created the first artificial organism. Aside from the many positive implications this has for medicine and the production of sustainable fuels, I’d like to know what this community thinks about the demonstration that life is no more and no less than complex chemicals reacting with one another. Nothing divine about it, it’s just chemistry.

    This is a good step but it doesn’t demonstrate abiogenesis. They only synthesized the DNA, not the whole cell.

    Harvard estimates the key to abiogenesis will be discovered within 20 years.

    If true, God will be annoyed. What if he comes down and wrecks their whole lab, like he did to tower of Babel ha-ha.

    Oh no, what I mean is, what if he confounds their language.

    Let’s see God do some biblical stuff now.

    Yeah…they did that a couple of years ago now. The thing that’s different with this one is the genome was written from scratch. It isn’t even related to any other life on Earth.

    I heard about this, I’m glad science is making progress. Still people of a religious nature may be hurt by this and not be able to accept it. If only science and religion would stop being enemies….

    Actually, scientists have not created life. The life was already there, and they simply implanted a synthesized genome. Please note the transplantation into a Mycoplasma capricolum recipient cell. That recipient cell was the life, already existent.

    A good step forward by science, nonetheless.

    Go you! I love to get on here and ruffle their feathers. It just proves that science has the answers not some contradictory book, you know. As a nursing major, I tend to gravitate to the science based theories myself due to the fact that they have tangible evidence. Can followers of a god say the same, really.

    Scientists have not created life. They have replaced natural DNA with artificial DNA within a natural cell.

    It’s a big step in showing how the first life could have started, but it is not creating life from non life.

    The question is, will this form of "life" sit around one day and talk about how it accidentally evolved from a random process, or will it say "who created me? I mean, it had to take some intelligence and planning to put me together, I couldn’t have just emerged by accident!!".

    And how will these scientists feel if this so-called life form completely ignores THEIR contribution to its creation?

    The only thing any of this proves is that it takes intelligence and planning to create something as complex as life (and that’s not even what was done here).

    Good thing these scientists weren’t willing to just plop the chemicals in a jar and sit around for a few billion years waiting for everything to come together properly, huh?
