What is your opinion of ethanol as an alternative fuel/ energy source?

I’m doing a survey for chemistry and it would be wonderful if anyone could help me out!

***Are you older than 30 years old?

1.) Did you know ethanol is a renewable fuel that comes from agricultural crops that are converted to ethanol?
2.) Based on what you know about ethanol in gas and fuel, would you be in support for using ethanol as an alternate fuel?

3.) (Following your answer in question 2?)….Why?

    I a 62. I know the facts in 1. I would not support more ethanol as we make it now, it is truly a disaster. Growing corn is totally destructive to the land and water. The chemical fertilizers and supplements for corn are enormous and they are all poison to the land and the water. They run into rivers and are the reason for the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. The genetically enhanced BT corn is damaging to all of the butterfly populations, particularly the Monarch. It is stupid and using corn this way has greatly decreased food crops and severely increased world shortages and starvation.
    Now if we got ethanol from other crops, such as switchgass which takes no poisons to grow and works well with the natural environment, then I think it is a great idea.

    1.) Did you know ethanol is a renewable fuel that comes from agricultural crops that are converted to ethanol? Yes, Brazil has been making the stuff to run cars for over 20 years.
    2.) Based on what you know about ethanol in gas and fuel, would you be in support for using ethanol as an alternate fuel? Not if it costs too much. If it can compete with other fuels that is fine. But subsidizing its production is silly.

    3.) I believe in the FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM. Put all fuel producers on the same level playing field and let the winners win and the losers lose.

    Yes I,m older than 30.
    Yes, I know how alcohol is made. In he US it is made primarily from corn.
    Ethanol as fuel is an excellent example of government incompetence. It is not better than gasoline.
    It is driving up food prices, it produces more CO2 per mile diven than gas, it is more expensive.

    What the US does no longer matters. India and China have control over this now.
    Electric cars need to come down in price and then we need nuclear plants and a higher capacirt grid.
    Thorium fission is the best option, China is building Thorium plants as fast as they can.
    We know what we need to do, we just need to ignore the naysayers and get on with it.

    1. Yes

    2. This type of fuel contains only 80% of the energy as compared to gas. This means you burn 20% more fuel. In addition the cost is greater than gas.

    3. No. If is more costly and it also raises the price of food as the raw materials are being diverted from the table to fuel production.

    I actually think that using hydrogen might be better since the only by-product is nothing but pure water, but ethanol MAY do.

    Yes, I did not that. I also know that it is very similar to Moonshine, except it is denatured by adding Poison to it. Also the Standard Oil company supported prohibition as a way to replace ethanol with gasoline.

    Yes, I would but the cars of today are designed to be used with gasoline. I think that all cars should be flex fuel cars so that they can run on both 100% gasoline or 100% ethanol or any mixture of the two.

    The internal combustion engine was orignially designed to run on ethanol based fuels. But the oil industry and the government has systematically moved the automobile away from ethanol.

    I should be legal for people to produce their own ethanol and use it to run their cars, trucks and farm equipment. But that kind of freedom is a threat to the powers that be.

    In my opinion, Oil based fuels are a monopoly. The US government treats any threat to this monopoly as a threat to national security. So, the oil industry is backed by the government and the military. This country will go to war over oil, yet ignore other conflicts.
